GEMAS Geochemical Mapping of Agriculture and Grazing Land Soils

GEOCHEMICAL MAPPING. The GEMAS Project Team has produced the Geochemical Atlas of European Agricultural Soils to establish the geochemical background in the agricultural and grazing land soil of Europe and to determine the key parameters that influence element availability in productive soil, according to the EU REACH regulation.

<b>PROJECT:</b> CATASTROPHE RESPONSE – red mud spill in Ajka/Kolontar 2010 <p> International experts and National Scientific Consortium carried out Fast Response airborne survey and <b>field geochemical sampling</b> (red mud spill, top soil, stream sediment, and background) of in October 2010, under GEM-RG Expert guidance.

Laboratory Leaching Tests - CONTAMINATION MOBILITY assessment

Static tests (leaching tests): NAG and ABA tests, ANC, EPA 1310, EPA 1320 and TCLP (EPA 1311) tests were performed on samples for mine waste toxic element mobility assessment. Pictures show titrating, boiling and preliminary acid buffer test (fizz test). Laser Ablation instrument is shown for solid analysis.

Morocco – field work – 2013

<b>PROJECT:</b> Morocco-Hungary Bilateral Project – climate zones: mine contamination mobility <p> Joint field work with Moulay Ismail University, Earth Science Department (ESD) and Hungarian Partner researchers. <b>Top soil</b> sampling (upper 10cm) carried out along <b>PATHWAY</b> (transport) of <b>WIND</b> blown <b>heavy metal</b> tailings dust gradient at the abandoned Zaida Pb-Zn Mines in Morocco under SEMI-ARID climatic conditions.

Eco-monitoring of Contamination - TREE RINGS

<b>PROJECT:</b> Ecosystem receptors - ECO-MONITORING -tree rings Several tree ring cores have been sampled and analysed for toxic element content the in Recsk Copper Mining Area, Hungary. Tree rings record contamination history and enable eco-monitoring. Soil samples were also analysed for toxic element content.

<b>PROJECT:</b> Contamination risk assessment SOURCE. Two abandoned mine waste rock heaps were sampled at various depth to study the spatial distribution of toxic elements and compare waste rock of various age.
